History of ICS
How It All Began?
The Institute of Computer Science (MU) was established in 1979 as a part of the Faculty of Science in UJEP Brno. One year later it was separated from the Faculty of Science and ranked as an independent rector's institute, after which it became an independent part of the university – a university institute. In 1994, the Institute participated conceptually and personally in the foundation of the Faculty of Informatics MU. Throughout its history, the ICS has been providing services to the university in the field of information and communication technologies and, at the same time, it has been involved in scientific and research activities alongside participating in teaching.
After its establishment the ICS was located in the premises of the Faculty of Science at Kotlářská Street. Since 1996 it has been located at the Faculty of Informatics at Botanická 68a Street until Summer 2020. Now the ICS is located at Centrum Šumavská.
The main fields of activity of the Institute currently include centralized computing systems including powerful clusters and virtualized systems, large-scale data storages, university computer network and communication infrastructure, management of the CESNET national network, data network and services security, university computer rooms, economic and administrative information systems, technology systems, support of library-information services, services for research teams, students and other users of information and communication systems at the university and within the Czech Republic.
