Warning: spear-phishing campaign targeting IS MU login credentials
The Cybersecurity Team of Masaryk University warns of an ongoing spear-phishing campaign aimed at stealing login credentials for the Masaryk University Information System.
At the beginning of 2023, a new director Jan Mysliveček joined us, whose priority is to provide top IT services to Masaryk University. At the end of March, all staff and students received an email directly from him asking for feedback on the eight main areas of service we provide. The survey received approximately 2900 responses, which were fairly balanced and positive.
"Our priority is to deliver top-quality IT services, and we simply cannot do that without feedback," explains Jan Mysliveček. "I would therefore like to thank everyone who took part in the survey and helped us to continue to improve our services." More than 15 percent of Masaryk University employees shared their opinion about IT services, so the results of their evaluation can be considered telling. Student responses represent about 5 percent of the total number of students and are therefore rather indicative.
Staff and students rated IT services as in a traditional school grading exercise - a grade of 1 being excellent and a grade of 5 being poor. Among the highest rated is the Microsoft 365 service package with an average grade of 1.5. The lowest rated service is the SUPO credit top-up service with a grade of 2.0. The survey has shown differences between services and workplaces and this has allowed us to focus on improving the shortcomings highlighted by respondents. The results of the survey are publicly available here.
In addition to the grades, some staff and learners completed verbal evaluations, which are available to service managers to help them focus on improving specific issues.
In total, we take care of about 180 different services. When our employees do their job well, the average user doesn't really notice them because the services they provide simply work as they should. We provide the university's network and Wi-Fi, and we provide the web hosting and ICT systems that we all use on a daily basis. We enable students to use, for example, the University's computer labs with 24/7 access and the ability to connect to a wide range of free paid-for electronic information resources. A Microsoft 365 package for up to five different devices including mobiles, tablets and laptops and 1TB of OneDrive space is also available to all students.
Thanks to us, university employees can use tools suitable for communication and team collaboration, time management or collaboration on documents. Cloud storage for data storage and VPN access for working from home are available to all. If users use the full potential of the services offered, they save themselves a lot of valuable time and achieve greater efficiency at work. We also provide a range of educational workshops, courses and training sessions for both students and staff, so that everyone can learn to use the maximum potential of the IT services available. The scientific community can use supercomputers to store big research data and get expert advice from IT professionals on challenging calculations thanks to the IST.
The proper operation of IT equipment and services at the University is ensured by a number of specialised departments united under the brand of the MU Institute of Computer Technology. The faculty IT administrator complements the university-wide IT Service Desk in 24/7 mode. In addition, we take care of services related to cybersecurity, which is becoming increasingly important with the ever-growing amount of information technology and data. This is provided by our CSIRT-MU team, which is the guarantor of Masaryk University's secure cyber environment. As part of the services provided, it warns users of current threats and offers them solutions to security incidents, penetration testing or various forms of education to raise awareness of responsible behaviour in cyberspace.
This survey is definitely not the end of our work. Director Jan Mysliveček plans to conduct a more specialized and detailed survey in selected areas among those who agreed to be contacted in the future. "In general, the results are positive, and this also applies to most of the verbal comments. It confirms our perception of the IT services provided as some of the best in the country's public universities. However, we must not rest on our laurels and we continue to look for areas that deserve further improvement. If you can think of anything that we could improve, please do not hesitate to contact us at it@muni.cz - and we will do our best to find a suitable solution for you," concludes Jan Mysliveček, Director of the Institute.
