Description | High-grade gliomas are highly malignant primary tumors of brain that arise by transformation of glial cells. The therapy consists of radical resection in combination with chemotherapy or/and radiotherapy, but the prognosis of patients is still very bad. The main reason is chemoradioresistance of these tumors, which manifests itself by early progression of the disease after finishing or during the therapy. The main aims of the research are therefore early prediction of therapy response and development of new adjuvant therapeutic approaches that would enable to overcome resistance. The important role in chemo-radioresistance play tumor stem cells and also signalling pathways that maintain stemness in these cells. The research of glioma stem cells (GSCs) has confirmed their association with the time to progression and overall survival of the patients. Morover, it was proved that biological properties of GSCs may be effectively regulated by microRNAs (miRNAs). MiRNAs are short endogenous molecules of RNA, which post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. Their expression was described to be deregulated in gliomas and levels of several of them correlate with response to therapy and overall survival of the patients. |
