Description Communication in foreign language classrooms differs in many aspects from both, genuine communication outside school and from typical communication during instruction in other school subjects. Out of such phenomena that in a monolingual society are rarely to be observed outside a foreign language classroom I will focus on code switching. Analysis of situations that involve code switching (e.g., utterances begin in one language and end in the other, words from one language contaminate an utterance in the other, the languages are switched on the border of lesson segments) may shed light on the role that the mother tongue plays in the teaching of foreign languages. I will concentrate on different contexts and situations in which code switching takes place in foreign language classrooms. Building on previous work of the IVŠV/IRSE team, I will analyse a corpus that consists of 89 transcripts of video-recorded lessons of English acquired in 2007 and 2011 in Czech primary (10) and lower secondary (79) classrooms.
