Description Schizophrenia is a severe complex mental disorder with high heritability and prevalence 0.5–1% of the population worldwide. Reliable diagnostic tests are still unavailable and the diagnosis is based mainly on interview of the person and family members. Finding biomarkers would improve the understanding of the disease and enable diagnosis in the early onset phase. Significant differences in the amino acid profiles in patients´ plasma in comparison with healthy were noted. Capillary electrophoresis coupled with laser induced fluorescence detection is a powerful tool for analysis of amino acids in biological samples. As a result, new derivatization and separation conditions for determination of all proteinogenic amino acids in human plasma were developed. Optimization and validation of the method is the subject of this contribution.
