A lecture held at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, commemorating the 130th anniversary of Fr. Trávníček’s birth (organized by Jazykovědné sdružení ČR). The aim of the lecture was to present Trávníček’s approach towards the cultivation of language in the context of linguistics of the particular period, especially in comparison with the approach of members of the Prague Linguistic Circle. The comparison proved that although the terminology used by Trávníček is different from the terminology used by members of the Prague Linguistic Circle, Trávníček’s approach is based on similar principles, especially as far as the focus on synchronic approach, on usage and on the functional aspect are concerned. |
