Description | The large collection of tile reliefs on the New Testament subject of the Adoration approached in a wider context includes three tiles with the central figure of the Virgin Mary: the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, the Adoration of Christ, and the Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven. The collection is defined by the identical framing of the individual scenes in which each main figure is given a space on an individual tile. Like other specimens from this collection, the Virgin Mary motifs are reported from several locations, from Lower Austria through eastern Bohemia, the Czech-Moravian Highlands, south and north Moravia to Czech Silesia. The available specimens were subjected to micropetrographic analyses which confirmed different places of the manufacture of the identical reliefs, sought in the areas where these tiles were found. The analyses of the reliefs indicate the origin of the tiles from identical matrices or moulds, thus offering more possible interpretations regarding the forms of their spreading. |
