Description Functional regions are regions defined on the basis of horizontal links, flows or interactions, using sophisticated iterative algorithms as standard. These are units that are by nature suitable and used for a variety of purposes, be it different analyzes, application of certain policies, etc. Depending on the various factors, the intensity and direction of the links change over time and may result in the formation or extinction of regions or changes in the course of their boundaries, which may be ambiguous in certain areas in certain areas (spatial uncertainty of sub-territorial units). The paper focuses on defining functional regions on the basis of commuting data in three time horizons, or comparing the results and evaluating changes that occurred in 1991-2011. Despite the relatively clear downward trend in the number of functional regions (also observed in other developed Western countries, which have a longer time series of regional systems defined by a consistent methodology), changes cannot be assessed as fundamental or revolutionary, given the scale and intensity of social changes taking place in the monitored period in the Czech Republic.
