Citation
Description Slovakia is small, capitalistic and liberal-democratic country, in which is the concept of national identity strongly connected to Christianity. But Slovak religious scene is much more varied and we can found there also movements in opposition to capitalism. Slovak modern Paganism is one of the strongest critics of all defects of current politico-economical system, including ecological crisis, broken agriculture and moral crisis caused by consumerism and lack of faith. Therefore, the conference paper will present an analysis of “Pagan” alternative modernity, which had been constructed in public activities, books and songs of Slovak modern Pagan leader Žiarislav since 1995. I will also discuss how Žiarislav´s idea of alternative modernity is closely connected not only to various forms of protests against neo-liberal capitalistic system, but also to reformulation of Slovak national identity within modern Pagan “lens”.
