Description | The absence of social relationships (social isolation, loneliness) is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality, comparable to alcohol consumption or occasional smoking. Social isolation is a recognized risk factor for developing cardiovascular diseases; however, the exact mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. Early-life social isolation can also affect the maturation of the central nervous system, leading to changes in autonomic functions. This study aimed to monitor ECG and blood pressure changes in early socially isolated rats with induced myocardial remodeling. Myocardial remodeling can be triggered by cardiomyocyte loss or chronic pressure and/or volume overload. Significant progression in metabolic and structural changes in cardiac cells may lead to impaired heart function and eventually heart failure. In this study, remodeling was induced through pressure-volume overload combined with mineralocorticoid stimulation. Sixteen male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: (1) socially isolated animals (n=8) housed individually without visual contact with other animals from the age of 3 weeks; and (2) group-housed animals (n=8) housed in social groups from the age of 3 weeks. At 10 weeks of age, myocardial remodeling was induced using the DOCA model. Blood pressure was measured regularly using a tail-cuff method before remodeling induction and over the subsequent three weeks. Short ECG recordings were also obtained. This study presents observed changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and selected ECG parameters reflecting the development of cardiac remodeling, as well as comparisons of selected parameters between the two groups. |
