Description | The aim of this paper is to present case studies based on radiocarbon dates from the Late and Final Bronze Age in Moravia. The application of radiocarbon dating to Late and Final Bronze Age burials faces two major methodological challenges. The first is the transition to the cremation burial ritual. Samples taken from cremated bones are affected by carbon from the firewood used in the burial pyre. The second issue is the shape of the IntCal20 calibration curve (Reimer et al. 2020), which demonstrates a strong oscillation between 1400-1300 BC and may result in the introduction of systematic biases into the dating. Similarly, in Moravia, as in neighbouring regions, the focus has been on radiocarbon dating of the Early and Middle Bronze Age skeletal burials. However, the increasing prevalence of cremation burials during the Middle Bronze Age limits the potential for direct skeletal dating. This paper presents three approaches that have been used to date Urnfield burials. Several dates have been obtained from exceptional skeletal burials from Central Moravia, which have been dated to the Late Bronze Age. Additionally, the first dataset based on carbonised bone was realised (Přáslavice), which is limited by the firewood used. However, this has provided information that is proving to be important for research. The last example will be the cremation burials dated on the basis of archaeobotanical samples (Znojmo). We will discuss the sampling procedure, the data and models currently available, and offer possible interpretative hypotheses. Finally, we will place the information in the context of previously published data from Moravia. Radiocarbon measurements allows us to evaluate temporal relationships and refine the absolute chronology. However, the results need to be placed in an overall context. |
