Description Adhesive systems necessary for bonding of orthodontic brackets to teeth enamel are the inevitable element and component of orthodontic treatment as they affect the process and success rate of orthodontic therapy. There are several in vitro methods of testing the endurance of adhesive systems, e.g. tests of strength of bond of materials used to attach orthodontic brackets; tests of microleakage below the brackets; tests of post-gel shrinkage; tests of elastic modules; tests of materials flexion. First articles on adhesive systems testing appeared in the 70??s of the last century. A??number of studies describing all factors contributing to adhesion of orthodontic brackets to enamel were published since. Nowadays, especially composite materials and resin-modified glass-ionomer cements are used. Our work aims to give the survey of basic characteristics and chemical composition of the materials, to discuss the main advantages in their use in orthodontics, and to describe testing of physical properties of both types of adhesives.
