Description Based on rest and redox potentials and exchange current density, sulfur-oxidizing cells of A. ferrooxidans were not able to oxidize the pyrite electrod, in contrast to iron-oxidizing cells. Induction of iron-oxidizing system in bacteria grown on sulfur was an essential factor for pyrite oxidation. The above induction proceeded during a lag phase at a low pH, which may affect the overall process because the cells were sensitive to low pH especially in the lag phase resulting in cell death and autolysis.
