Description As many complex biological phenomena, pain starts to be studied on the genetic level. The development of molecular biology in the last years enabled not only cloning, mapping and sequencing of genes but also a research of genes by the techniques of knock out, oligo antisense or viral vectors. These methods help us to find, which of 30 40 thousands genes influence the pain feeling, which of genes are polymorphic and which of the polymorphisms are responsible for interindividual differences in pain feeling. The emotional part of pain represents a big problem in the pain research. Moreover, the tools that could be used for the pain measurements and for the pain comparison between the individuals are insufficient. In spite of these problems, a lot of information is available thanks to molecular biology and the experiments on animals. Recently, the genetic basis of familial hemiplegic migraine and congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis were proved. During the last six years, genetic research of pain is focused mostly on the possibility of gene therapy of patients with chronic pain. The results of these studies are encouraging and one can say that in next future they could be used in clinical practice.
