Description The treatment of hypertension has to be complex. It begins with changes in lifestyle and when blood pressure fails to decrease to normal, medicaments are administered. Monotherapy on the average lowers diastolic blood pressure by 4 to 6 mmHg, and systolic blood pressure by 7 to 13 mmHg. Normalisation is attained in about 30% of those treated. Combined therapy is much more effective, it lowers the diastolic blood pressure by 7 to 14 mmHg, and systolic blood pressure by 12 to 22 mmHg. In view of its effectiveness, appropriate combined therapy allows to lower the doses of drugs as well as side effects; in high-risk patients it lowers the risk of development and progress of cardiovascular diseases.
