Description Arsenic ions are released in the environment during bacterial arsenopyrite oxidation in sulfide wastes or biohydrometallurgy. Elemental sulfur can be formed as an intermediate during arsenopyrite oxidation. Its further biooxidation to sulfuric acid is inhibited by arsenic ions. Therefore this study investigated the inhibitory effects of arsenic on the oxidation of elemental sulfur by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.
