Spatio-temporal variability of hailstorms for Moravia and Silesia in the summer half-year of the period 1961-2000

Description A spatio-temporal analysis of the variability of hailstorms in Moravia and Silesia in the summer half-year (April-September) is made for the period 1961-2000, using critically evaluated observations from the meteorological stations of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI). Considering geographical distribution, an increase in the number of days with hailstorms is perceptible with increasing height above sea level, with maxima in the region of the Hrubý Jeseník and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids Mountains. Data from 135 stations supply a series of the numbers of days on which hailstorms occurred for Moravia and Silesia, exhibiting upon analysis a statistically significant falling trend (-2.3 days/10 years). Application of the MESA method also revealed statistically significant cycles within this series with durations of 3.3 and 2.2 years. Within the summer half-year, the maximum number of days with hailstorms takes place in May, followed by June (a combined total of almost 50% of all days with hailstorms). Following CHMI classification, 87.6% of days with hailstorms occurred during cyclonic situations, above all during situation B (11.4%), followed by NEc (8.9%), SWc2 (7.7%), Ec (7.3%) and C (7.1%). In anticyclonic situations the most significant situation was Wal with 6.4%.
