Description | Malignant transformation of healthy cell to tumor cell results from aberrant gene expression. Therefore, the methods targeting gene expression can open important approaches for therapy of cancer. There are two main types of strategies affecting pattern of gene expression in cells. First, gene expression can be targeted epigenetically by DNA methylation or histone acetylation. Alternatively, the methods based on specific interaction between an antisense nucleic acid and its target molecule can affect gene expression as well. These inhibitors include antisense oligonucleotides, antisense RNA, decoy oligonucleotides, ribozymes and DNAzymes. Although exact molecular mechanisms of these gene silencers is not completely known yet, their relevance for clinical trials is currently under investigation. |
