Description | Community of metazoan parasites of round goby Neogobius melanostomus was investigated in three stretches of the River Danube: in Bulgaria (native population of round goby), Slovakia and Austria (introduced populations). In total 21 species were found to parasitize N. melanostomus. Parasite species richness decreased from Bulgarian to Austrian round goby population. However, the highest mean abundance of parasites was found in Austria, the lowest in Slovakia. No specific parasite species of N. melanostomus have been recorded. N. melanostomus was more likely to accept new parasite species in non-native area. Among these new parasite species, also the non-native species Anodonta woodiana and Anguillicola crassus occurred. |
