Description | In the past two decades, there is a great industrial interest in preparation of protective nanostructured diamond and diamond-like carbon coatings. Since the development of very low load indentation hardness machines and the invention of the scanning tunnelling and atomic force microscopes (STM, AFM), hardness studies have been routinely possible on the nanometer scale. AFM enables to analyse mechanical and tribological properties of the surface and near surface of thin films due to the low applied loads compared with other techniques. The different modes of AFM operation, such as contact mode, force modulation, lateral force and force-distance curve, provide information on wear, relative hardness, friction, tip surface adhesion, surface stiffness and Young modulus. |
