Description Selected quaternary benzophenantridine alkaloids (chelirubine, chelilutine, sanguirubine and chelerythrine) were characterised in this work by means of luminescence spectroscopy and found to be highly fluorescent in region between 500 nm and 700 nm (fluorescence quantum yields were estimated to be in region between 0.1 and 0.4). The studied alkaloids were also fluorometrically titrated by double-stranded oligonucleotides and deoxypolynucleotides to obatain association constants (Ka, M-1) and calculated constant were compered with other benzophenanridine alkaloid probes
