Description Brick masonry constitutes a significant part of the construction materials found in historic buildings. The level of decay in bricks differs widely, in many cases requiring partial replacements. The selection of compatible materials for the replacement of original bricks is crucial in order to avoid damage to the historical structure. Our findings indicate that the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of bricks can be monitored by remote Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (rLIBS). We suggest that rLIBS results should be compiled in a database and could be used to evaluate more objectively the state of conservation of historic bricks.
