Description | Advantages and attraction of remote sensing, and especially the satellite one, are since its beginning equalized among publics based on its promotional values. The educational and knowledge impact on the publics was derived later and since mid-1970s the main outcomes were presented regularly in the popular scientific papers. The first book aerial and satellite atlases appeared on both sides of the ideologically divided world only in middle 1980s. At that time, the thematic division of satellite atlases started. Nowadays, following classes of remote/sensing atlases can be distinguished: 1) image collections, 2) image and map sets, 3) geographical atlases with explanatory images. The presentation forms vary between a) paper book and b) digital versions. With regard to the themes presented in the atlas, the reader can use a) general and b) thematic atlases with a) global, b) regional and/or c) national coverage. The most atlases represent complex editorial enterprises, logically manifested in higher sale prices. Regardless to their dominating promotional and representative functions, readers can find important information useful for many human activities not available in traditional cartographic atlases.
