Description | Medical faculties in the Czech Republic and Slovakia have developed a new strategy for the construction of a network. Instead of a new centrally organized consortium they created the network from the bottom up by joining existing portals already in daily use. Authors from the contributing faculties are able to determine the user access privileges to particular learning objects. In one year MEdical FAculties educational NETwork (MEFANET) had spontaneously expanded over the two states (4000 teachers and 25,000students). The central gateway to the network collects all the metadata from the web portals. Joined medical faculties teach in both national and English languages. MEFANET is open for the medical schools of any other country. The community meets to discuss author teams, applications for grants, harmonized purchase of licences etc. Autonomy of faculties is fully respected. All operational costs of the individual portals are funded by individual faculties. |
