Description Nitrogen post-discharge kinetics has been investigated many years. The sensitivity to admixtures has been proven in previous studies and this fact leads us to use this kind of discharge for experiments simulating elemental analysis. A lower pressure and temperature are factors which, among others, discriminate its analytical application. Sample introduction systems for solid, liquid and gas samples were tested: a simple flow-through evaporator for mercury, an electrothermic vaporizer for some solid metals and two systems for hydride generation. The vaporizers for mercury or liquid metals are based on saturation of the carrier gas with the sample vapours, whereas the hydride forming elements react in their acidic matrices with sodium tetrahydridoborate. The created mixture of the carrier gas with the metal vapour or hydride is taken into the discharge space. Vibrational population changes of upper electronic nitrogen states were analyzed and some responsible kinetic reactions were proposed.
