Description A huge amount of mathematical knowledge has been produced over the last millennia and still is produced every day. Mathematics has been a major factor for the prosperous development of modern societies and mathematical knowledge is part of the cultural heritage of humanity. The digital age offers new forms of doing mathematics and authoring mathematical knowledge, new technologies to preserve and manage themathematical knowledge, as well as new methods to democratize its uptake and usage. The “Seventh International Conference on Mathematical Knowledge Management (MKM)” took place in Birmingham, UK, in 2008. As part of the Conferences on Intelligent Computer Mathematics, it was co-located with other conferences and workshops, among others the Workshop “DML: Towards a Digital Mathematics Library”. This special issue arose from MKM and DML and is devoted to the authoring, digitalization and management of mathematical knowledge. Finally, nine articles from 24 submitted were selected for publication in this special issue.
