Description p53 is a key tumor suppressor. It protects cell against oncogenic transformation in many ways. The loss of the tumor suppressor p53 function itself moves cells strongly toward the tumor phenotype. In addition, many p53 protein variants, in consequence of mutation, gain other – oncogenic properties which move cells even further toward malignant phenotype. Thus p53 mutations undoubtedly represent cardinal step toward a tumor.
