Description | Leukocoria (white pupillary reflex) is one of the most important signs of intraocular pathology. Finding out the cause of leukocoria is necessary for appropriate treatment. It is essential especially for children with malignant retinoblastoma because it can save their life. Leukocoria is an important clinical sign that should prompt an urgent detailed ophthalmologic examination to identify the underlying pathology. Authors retrospectively evaluated the occurrence and the most important differential signs of various causes of leukocoria at 457 pediatric patients during the period from 1995 to 2010. Disorders causing leukocoria in mentioned group were congenital cataract, retinoblastoma, Coats disease, persistent hyperplatic primary vitreous, retinopathy of prematurity, familiar exsudative vitreoretinopathy, toxocariasis, coloboma of retinae, tuberous sclerosis, angiomatosis retinae, retinal dysplasia. |
