Popis | Research of Buddhist meditation is in these days much more connected with questions like: What can science learn from meditation? What can meditation teach us about our mind? Can meditation help us feel healthier and better? These questions are really connected to presented picture of Buddhism mainly as a meditation practice. But this concept of Buddhism as an experience is the product of Protestant Buddhist movement of 19th century. This picture unfortunately has become a stable view on Buddhism and as such was accepted by Western scholars. However Buddhism is not solely about the experience linked to the meditation practice, but it is also beliefs and rituals, which jointly form the experience we are mostly interested in. My paper will try to appeal on change of the research paradigm we are using on Buddhist meditation practice. We, as scholars, should start to approach meditation in a completely opposite way. Let's study religious phenomena scientifically, rather than use religious phenomena as scientific methods. This change is the end of old paradigm, but also beginning of new Religious studies! |
