Popis | Violent acts against the Roma in the Czech Republic have been perpetrated since the early 1990s and are a postcommunist phenomenon. The absence of precise statistical data is a barrier to quantifying the exact number, but nonetheless enables us to determine significant trends and a chronology of the facts with an increase in offences since the beginning of the century. Extreme rightwing movements – which remain weak electorally over the entire period – play an essential role in the increase of violent acts. These acts committed by skinheads or unarmed paramilitary groups (guards) are located in the regions with a strong Roma density and seem to be increasingly accepted by the population. The extreme left-wing has organised itself in reaction and has given itself the goal of protecting the Roma, who themselves have chosen to practise self-defence. |
