Direct analysis of powdered materials does not require a time consuming sample dissolution which also means a risk of contamination or loss of volatilize elements. Methods of direct analysis are e.g. X-ray spectrometry, neutron activated analysis or arc spectrometry. The solution can be also inductively coupled plasma spectrometry with optical or mass detection (ICP-OES/MS) for analysis of aerosol arised by laser ablation (LA) of the sample. The aerosol composition which is analysed in ICP is influenced by many conditions during the laser-sample interaction (sample character, laser parameters, ablation cell...), the aerosol transported into ICP (carrier gas, material, diameter and length of tubing) and vaporization in plasma. During these processes element fractionation occurs which means the different composition of the evaporated aerosol in ICP and the sample composition. Powdered materials are analysed in a form of pellets prepared by pressing, pouring or fusing of the homogenized sample with a suitable binder. The aim of the project is a study of fractionation during ablation of compact and powdered samples with different matrices using the aerosol particle size distribution, aerosol composition and ICP analytical signal.
