Description | The on-going discussion concerning quality in education concurrently addresses one of its central challenges - professionalization of teaching. A number of research studies show it is the teacher who plays the key role in the quality of education and who, in Hatties words, “makes a difference“(Hattie, 2003). It is within this context that our paper aims to shed some light on the concept of expertise in the teaching profession. A brief survey of current research on teacher expertise is provided focusing mainly on approaches to the study of expertise, main trends in research of the phenomenon, pinpointing challenges posed by expert teacher identification procedures as well as the selection of appropriate research methods. Last but not least, a currently conducted research project conceptual framework and research design are presented. |
