Description | Study of disruptive effect of electromagnetic field on animal magnetoreception is becoming very interesting part of sensory physiology and could contribute to further understanding of this unique animal ability. For now, effect is demonstrated mostly on migratory birds. We were curious about possible negative effect of radiofrequency field (RF) on magnetsensitivity of antarctic krill, Gondogeneia antarctica. We verified fact, that these animals show spontaneous orientation in sea-land axis (Y-axis) and they are using Earth magnetic field for their orientation. However, after exposition to radiofrequency field, animals were disoriented. Ability of orientation was lost not only in RF oscilating around Llarmor frequency (969kHz for James Ross island), but disorientation lasted also when animals were exposed to frequency tenfold higher (10MHz). Moreover, lack of orientation displayed not only in RF with intensity 20nT, but persists even in 2nT. Our preliminary results enrich recent findings of disruptive effects of RF on animal magnetoreception.
