| Description | The ageing of population in liberal democracies raises speculations about how is this process reflected in their social stratification and how does the changing conception of the old age and the status of the elderly influence the realm of politics. Many authors suggest that what dominates in the Czech Republic at present is a status stratification and that the old age can be defined even in political terms. Nevertheless, the influence of the elderly is still quite limited. As a category, they remain too heterogenous. The status, political activity and political views of the elderly are rather an extension of their previous social life than an expression of their common interest as the elderly. This conclusion is supported also by the data obtained from a survey of the political behaviour of the elderly which was conducted in the Czech Republic. Rather than by the old age itself, this behaviour is conditioned by a membership to wide social strata prior to reaching the old age. The differences between the elderly and the rest of the population do not consist so much in the degree of their interest in politics, as in a certain inclination towards the left margin of the political spectrum. The decline in identification with mass political parties located in the classical right-left political spectrum, as referred to for example by Giddens (1994) or Penn and OBrien (1996), has not been cogently verified. |
